About joana

I am an Anglo-Portuguese artist based in Sintra. My work draws on personal memory and connection to the landscapes of Portugal, translated into large-scale abstract paintings. After returning to Portugal in 2024, I completed a cycle of work which culminated in my third solo exhibition, and in 2025 I was shortlisted for the Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize.

I am currently developing a multidisciplinary project that brings my painting into dialogue with archival material from my family history — including photographs, recipes, ceramics and oral testimonies — to explore how women’s lives and stories are preserved, forgotten or transformed over time.

My work is held in public, private and corporate collections internationally.
